Why Decision Abroad exists

Decision Abroad was created to address a gap in how people approach moving abroad. Most resources focus on logistics such as visas, paperwork, and relocation services. But before any of that, most people are still trying to answer a more basic question: would this move actually work for my life?

Decision Abroad is designed to help people answer that question first. I know because it is the question I wished someone had helped me answer before I made the move myself.

How This Came To Be

My name is Beco Lichtman. I’m an American-French dual citizen who has lived in France at different stages of my life—first as a student in my twenties, and later permanently with my husband. That journey took us from work visas to permanent residency and eventually French citizenship. It remains one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.

Professionally, I’ve spent more than twenty years helping organizations navigate complex, high-stakes decisions as a strategic facilitator. Ironically, despite that experience, there were aspects of moving to France that caught us completely by surprise.

That’s what led me to create Decision Abroad. I realized most people begin by researching visas, taxes, and paperwork before they’ve answered the more fundamental question:

Does moving to France actually make sense for my life?

Decision Abroad exists to help people answer that question with greater clarity. Once you’ve decided the move is right for you, I can also introduce you to the trusted immigration lawyers, accountants, relocation specialists, and other professionals we’ve come to rely on throughout our own journey.

What makes this different

Decision Abroad focuses on one stage of the process only. It does not provide legal advice, relocation guidance, or execution services. Those matter, but they come later and are best handled by qualified professionals. This is for the earlier moment, before you are too far in to think clearly.

Who this is designed for

Decision Abroad is designed for people who are seriously considering living abroad and want to understand what they may be underestimating before going further. It is especially useful when the decision feels important, personal, or hard to settle.

It may not be a fit for people who are already deep into visa applications or looking for step-by-step relocation help.

Why Decision Abroad begins with France

France is one of the countries people most often imagine living in. But everyday life in France runs through systems that many people only encounter after they have already started the process. This includes residency rules, healthcare participation, taxation, housing requirements, and administration.

Decision Abroad begins with France because it offers a clear example of how these systems work together and how they interact with a person’s life. Not ready to start? Get occasional emails on what Americans get wrong before moving to France.
